Sibelius 6 trouble, anyone think they can help?

Hi, I'm using Sibelius 6 for a highschool composition assesment and I'm having some issues while composing for Piano.

I am attempting to create a run shown in Attachment one;

But everytime I enter the minum below the crotchet it splits the minum into two notes tied together, making me unable to add the rest of run (shown in Attachment two.)

I also have the same issue when trying to create the run in Attachment 3.

I have reversed the stems on the notes to try and make them opposites but it still will not allow me to place them together.

Any help is much appreciated :)
 
I don't have any experience with this program, but I have a little with Finale. I think your issue is that you need to make the notes shorter in length if you're going to make a run. Runs usually consist of 8th or 16th notes. I played a piece junior year that had a pretty decent run to it, but I for the life of me cannot remember what piece it was.
