silencing Case fans with resistors!

hey guys i have researched and heard of people adding resistors to make their fans run at a lower speed and make their system noticably quiet. I have made sure that my system does not need much air circulation by underclocking my quad core to 2.00 ghz, and udnerclocked my memory. i have tested the ehat of my peripherals and they seem pretty cool.

I have an antec 300 case with a 140mm, and 120mm cooling fan. i want to add resistors so that it will run at 7 volts, instead of 12 volts. i also noticed that my psu fan is noticably loud, but is very cold. i also want to convert that to 5-6 volts instaead of 12. anyone know what kind of resistors i would need?, i have soldering and circuitry experience already. i have access to radioshack and frys for components. any reccomendations o ya 5 dollar budget :D
 
any resistor would work... 1/4-1/2 should be adaquite. And i dont think you need to reduce voltage, i think puting one in series with the positive side should work.
 
Well first check your BIOS before you do this, I've had motherboards that allow voltage restrictions to fans from the BIOS without any hard mods.
 
yes my bios does not have voltage restrictions, and its the psu fan, and the case can connect to molex. and can you send me a link to resistors at radioshack that would work for this?
 
Common current draw for fans can be 100 - 200mA so Watts=Volts x Amps, therefore Watts can = 1.2 watts - 2.4 watts so the resistor should be rated at least to that wattage. Buy a 2.5 watt 1K pot and connect into the +12v line of the fan then adjust its speed to whatever.

Or better still buy a fan controller, they are not dear and have the controls already on it.
 
theres a guide somewhere, that shows which pins to remove to have the fans run at 7 volts, i think thats what they suggest anyway
 
actually the problem is not the fan, its the ahrd drive! omfg i was stopping all of the fans from spinnign and realized its the hard drive.. thers no way i can maek that quiter :[
