simple animations for video

I'm trying to do a little bit of basic video editing, and I need a program for creating simple animations like you would do in PowerPoint (mainly for text and pictures). My preference is for something very inexpensive or free/open source.
 
For editing purposes Windows movie maker will be sufficient for me. However, there is no way to create animations beyond transitions. I need to be able to animate text and pictures. For example have different effects for the appearance of text like you could do in PowerPoint. I think PowerPoint is really good for making these kinds of animations, but I only wish they could be saved as AVI files so I could include them in my video.
 
Video

I would think you best bet is to find a free screen video recorder. Then you can make a powerpoint, video it and add it to your video with Movie Maker.
