simple memory question

DDR2 400 non-ECC 1GB, 512MB or 256MB
DDR2 533 ECC 1GB, 512MB or 256MB

according to dell's system specs, my computer would have one of those two types of memory. i know i have two 1gig sticks - but the type i dont know. my questions:

how can i tell exactly what my memory is?

i call them ram types, they look like this:
DDR 400 (PC 3200)/DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)/DDR2 675 (PC2 5400)

does all that matter (obvioulsy performance, but i mean funtionality) or will any 240-pin stick work in a 240-pin slot?

Have you looked on the sticks themselves? Most of the time RAM has a sticker that describes the type of RAM that it is...

What model Dell are you running? By looking over the product details and specifications that will immediately tell you the memory supported and used.

i have a dell precision workstation 370, mines the type that stands up... not the one that looks like a VCR. i dont know what you call that, is it form factor?

cpu-z will tell you what type of sticks they are, and which slot each one is in.

functionally though, 512mb is better than 256mb... and as long as it doesnt bottleneck the cpu then you're fine.

as for compatibility, any 240-pin dimm will fit in a 240-pin slot. just as any 184-pin dimm would fit in any 184-pin slot, and any LGA 775 processor would fit in any LGA 775 socket. of course, some motherboards aren't compatible with some types of memory, just how not all motherboards have support for the new core 2 duo processors that are out. of course, most motherboards support most 240-pin dimms, so theres always a small chance that it in fact won't be compatible. 95% of the time they are though.
