i really have no idea if this is in the right topic of forums but im building a comp online and i have a desicion between (im gonna copy the page word for word) a "Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 524 (3.06GHz, 533MHz FSB)" or a "MD Athlon(TM) 64 3500+ (2.2GHz / 512KB L2 cache)"

thats exactly what it said...someone also told me athlons are good but im wondering if its really all that much better

If the main purpose of the computer is gaming, go with the AMD. If your going to be multi-tasking alot, get the intel. If its for general use, get whatevers cheapest.

if the price is almost the same, the AMD may actually be a little bit better, judging from the fact it is a 3500 whereas the intel is a 3.06 (the numbers aren't an exact correlation by any means, but they can kind of give you a rough estimate). I'm an Intel person myself, but again, price is a big factor here.

those numbers really arent comparable. its easy, as stated above. if ur gaming go amd if ur not doin any gaming at all go intel.

And AMD 3500+ is roughly equivalent to an Intel 3.5Ghz at gaming, if its not for gaming you cant compare the model number to the clock speed of an intel.

yeah this is why I said "the numbers aren't an exact correlation by any means", but I still think the AMD will outperform te intel

Depends what hes doing with it, for basic tasks im sure the AMD would be better, but if hes doing cpu intensive apps such as video editing or rendering, the Intel would outperform it.

Hmm

Well the AMD is worse at multitasking is not a valid argument for some time now ith the onset of the X2 processor line from AMD. Back on topic however, the 3500+ should be a an overall better processor. I would go for that instead of the P4.

I was referring to the AMD 3500+, not AMD in general, lol.

And dont get me wrong, i'd say the AMD is the better choice, just making note that the AMD 3500+ is not equivilant to a Intel 3.5Ghz at general use.

as long as we're all being somewhat anal, maybe I should mention I've never actually seen a 3.5Ghz pentium, but whatever

all you need to do is overclock a 3.4Ghz to a 3.5Ghz, there ya go ;)

thanks and ya most likely i will be a gamer....although right now anything will be better than the computer im using (a win98 compaq)....also does anybody know if the athlon 3500 pro will play counter-strike source...i just love that game :D

Deffinetly, if you have a good video card you could play CS:S on a Athlon XP 2200+.

Never heard of the Athlon 3500 Pro?

in the video card subject....what should i be looking for quality-wise...like how many MB is good for average gamer with maybe a 50dollar budget

ummmm for like 93 dollars you can get a REALLY good card called a 9600xt but if ur willing to spend 150 then go check the the 6600 gts and the 6900 series

Unfortunately, a Intel 3.5GHz (m going to infer "Intel Pentium4 3.5Ghz") doesnt exist.

if its not for gaming you cant compare the model number to the clock speed of an intel.
And if it's for gaming, how might i relate FX55 to an intel clock number? (the correct answer is "you wouldnt because that would be dumb")

but if hes doing cpu intensive apps such as video editing or rendering, the Intel would outperform it.
Dont be so sure

all you need to do is overclock a 3.4Ghz to a 3.5Ghz, there ya go
Funny. The Pentium4 3.4Ghz is also discontinued. ;)

also does anybody know if the athlon 3500 pro will play counter-strike source...i just love that game

Why wouldnt it?
