That depends on your ISP connection there. If that will be seen with a residential gateway router with one system seeing a nik or model card the rest see a single wire going out from the usb port adapter used to the dsl router. That would be the typical type of IE connection for still seeing 98 work.

The newer wireless would probably lack to some degree the needed support for the older versions. 98 was first to see usb 2.0 support making this possible. The thing to do there is actually consult the ISP's own tech support on this directly. They can explain what they support as well as offer for services.

windows 98 had internet sharing, however it is very full of security holes and susceptible to many forms of exploits and viruses. If these computers just need basic office applications and internet I would suggest tossing a light weight version of Linux on them, which is free.

The problem I had here may be faced there with Linux and ISPs. We all know that 98 is long gone for being the new thing with Vista out and XP aging. When trying several distros here however there were no drivers to be found for the ISP used here and may be faced there too. The satelite systems use a usb port here like what it sounds like will be the usb adapter method there.

Apple/Mac is another alternative if not upgrading to 2000 or XP. Another problem with switching to Linux is the people with no Linux experience trying to maintain it. That's a different kind of public place there where the members are often pc unwise instead of pc savay like you would see on a forum like this. FireFox and Thunderbird would be a good thought for the browser and email to consider however.

Well considering that networking is standardized there is no need for drivers for a Linux box to connect to the ISP's service. All you would need is a router (cheap) and then a lightweight distro of Linux (free) after you install it, it just runs open office and firefox and then you are done. There is no maintaining it, and at least with Linux you can get community support online. Good luck finding support for windows 98. In fact I charge double to work on legacy systems because I hate working on them.

Then explain why I couldn't connect through a dsl router here using a usb adapter when trying several distros out? The main thing to note and mention of using FireFox was the more secure alternative over IE 6 for sure on the older versions of Windows. But the main question remaining would be the systems in use there as far as what they support.

well the reason i want to do this is beacause my win xp one day just stopped sharing it and it been reset and so has everthing that is connected but it wont share any more i do not know why but still i want to share usb adapter to ethernet i know it works but i cant get it to
thanks for all the help

You may only need to perform a repair install if not a clean one to see XP sharing normally again there. That would be for any Windows problems while going into the device manager to remove and then reinstall by update method would likely restore this. I run into this quite often with a usb adapter to dsl router here.

The tip is to completely remove it from the DM and then select the add new hardware option in the control panel to select network adapter. The list including the name of that adapter should then be seen. You may end up with copy #2 but see that work.

OUCH! I was referring to hard wired not wireless. For that you should go through the troubleshooting section the ISP provides or call them directly and explain the problems you are seeing there. That would be one step to see some possible happy ending. This is afterall their own ball game there.
