Single Core to Dual Core

I think youd notice the difference, and would like it, since your an overclocker, look at the 5000+ black edition, it has an unlocked multi :)

I'm 100% sure you'd notice the difference. Intels are known to be better overclockers, so make sure you don't overlook them as well. It would mean getting a new motherboard, but it might be a worthwhile exchange.

Nah... That black edition is overpriced and nothing more than ornamental hardware... You could get an E4400 for the same price... Both the 5000+ and E4400 will go to ~3Ghz on a good cooler, but the Core architecture on the E4400 will take out the 5000+

Why would 129 bucks 2.6ghz X2 with a unlocked X, G2 stepping higher yeild processor be overpriced and how could he run a E4400 on a AM2 motherboard

The core architecture of the Intel chips are better than that of the AMD's, So while the AMD may have a faster clock speed, the Intel boasts better efficiency, and uses less power overall, while performing better. Keep in mind that clock speed isn't the only factor, Intel chips may perform more calculations at a lower clock speed more quickly than a higher clocked AMD chip. Which is why at this point, the Intel's core 2 duo's are the way to go for most consumers.

Those things are an ornamental POS!! That's like buying the old Pentium EE today and it being beat out by a $220 E6600... Why by something for $129 that's 2.6Ghz with the unlocked multi? In the first place it's an AMD, you know as well as I do that Intel is OC'ing better right now. I could find a 5600+ for ~$10 more. But, yes, I see where you would think that the unlocked multi would do some good.... I just don't buy stuff like that

Oh and the motherboard, could easily be replaced by one of these

All that is common knowledge, your missing the point. He has a AM2 system, all he wants to know is if it would benefit him to upgrade to a X2, not to change motherboards and processor. And yea I would advice to get a 5600 instead of a 5000 but not to swap boards out just for a E4400

What motherboard does he have? Will it even take an X2?

EDIT: Okay it will support X2, I see your point.. I wouldn't trust that board with $120-140....:P

I agree on that one I dont like ECS either, but I think all AM2 boards can use a X2. You might need a bios update for the newer F3 stepping ones and the EE models

How did you guess that I wasn't an AMD guy? Never knew it the whole time, eh? Anyway, Idk that all AM2 could use X2, not the same with some Intel 775's...

I cant swear all do, but I,ve never saw one that didnt. Even the ones I have installed that just listed as Athlon 64/ Sempron still could run a X2. Some of the cheaper end ones never got a bios update for the FX but when the FX was new who would want to run a 1000 buck FX 62 on a 45 buck motherboard

The FX, IMHO, is more of the ornamental crap that they market.. I mean like the Intel X6800, maybe a year after that was released and then this thing(E6850) chewed it up with being on the E-series and not even X-series.

Ok, so I tried replacing the single core with the dual core for ha ha's I used a processor that I just ordered for my Uncle's build - its only an AMD 64 X2 4200 2.2

question --when put the processor in - the pc wouldnt post.... I just looked up the specs again and the voltage listed was 1.25/1.30/1.325V

I just remembered that I was oc-ing the single core and voltage was set to 1.4 - could that be why - did I fry it - or do I just need to go back and reduce voltage?

The 1.4 voltage would not fry the CPU, are you sure its a good processor. Try reseting the bios with the jumper or take the battery out for a few minutes. From the looks of it the only bios updates for a processor is for the G1-G2 and F3 steppping. If you have the 65nm 4200 with G1 stepping your going to have to put your old processor back in to get it to boot and update the bios

oh yeah... do i just change settings in the bios or do I need to dowload an update or flash it?
