Single monitor with multiple inputs at once

I want to build a group of machines, say four towers, that will all output to one monitor and operate individually.

Can this be done?
What would I need to make this work?

I want to be able to see all four outputs at the same time, and manually select a single machine and make it full screen, do whatever and then send it back into the 4 way split of all the outputs.
 
I'm not sure that this can be done, but the next best thing would be to get a KVM switch. You can then hook up those four computers to one keyboard, mouse and monitor. Then it is just a matter of pressing a button on the KVM switch to switch between computers.

If you want to go all out you could get 4 additional monitors and hook up those to the computers and set them to mirror what the computer sends to the main monitor you work with. That would allow you to see what you are running on each computer at the same time. But in my opinion that would be going over the top.
 
KVM is how you want to do that, will allow you to control multiple machines with one keyboard/mouse/monitor

else fails, if your running xp pro/windows 7 pro you could do remote desktop using RDC, and just keep track of IP addresses, connecting the machines to your router only, honestly i do this mostly when i need to do minor stuff with a machine.
 
A while ago I used one monitor for my main computer (DVI) and my macintosh mini (VGA). I could switch between the inputs and pull out the appropriate keyboard. However, as others mentioned, a KVM is the better alternative. Unless it's some classy monitor with a built in KVM, you'll need a mouse/keyboard/speakers for each computer
