single or dual core

I would say Dual Core. Some games that aren't multi-threaded have shown better results on a Single core, because it can't utilize multiple cores. However, most games and everything else are moving towards multi-cores. Just go with a Dual-Core. You'll be more satisfied. Plus, they're not even expensive anymore.

there is not point in getting a single core when it's the same price as a dual. just like what everyone else said already, get a dual core

Another $40 gets you a 2.6GHz, same Brisbane core. Plus, when you get a little more experience playing around, this puppy should easily OC to a full 3.0GHz. Only downside is that it doesn't come with a heatsink and fan.

I'm sure that there are some more CPUs in the 2.6-2.8GHz range that won't break your budget and will include a (mediocre) fan. I didn't post those links because I'm tired, and I've already been looking at the Black Edition Brisbane to replace my current 2.8GHz Windsor. The unlocked multipliers are very attractive, as is the easy potential for 3.0GHz, and the possibility of 3.1 or 3.2 (with a little luck).

What kind of games will you be playing? Something like WoW won't require very much at all, but the latest and greatest demand an 8800GT or GTS and a beefy processor to avoid bottlenecks. Just not sure at what point a CPU will bottleneck either one of those rather muscular cards.

I would say go with either of the following processors:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 (2.4 gigahertz) or faster model

AMD Athlon 64 X 2 5600+ (2.8 gigahertz) or faster model

lol, he's the 9th to say dual core ;)

but back to the questions, a dual-core is nice. most new games run better on a duo rather than single, and more apps will pop up that utilize it as well. it'll be a good idea to future proof yourself now and spend the same amount of money, rather than buying a new dual-core when the world switches to duos hehe
