ok, i made a mistake in buying my laptop. its good in terms of processing power and stuff, but the graphics and 3d applications are a joke, including games. but like any human, id rather whine and twist and wriggle my way around this mess than admit defeat and fault. so......

its an sis mirage 672. a really bad chipset on my motherboard which im not too sure i can replace. it wont even do basic things like 3ds max which i use for college. even the oldest games like command and conquer wont run.

but ive heard of ways around it to optimize them for performance and make them compatable with programs improving speed at the cost of visuals. such as switching ram with the chip.

anyways, has anybody got any hints or tips on this matter?

I'm actually using an SiS Chip at the moment, in an old laptop, I'm not too sure on the specs, but it aint great. I can remember it running Empire Earth fine though :P

true but

yeah i also think that direct x10 has someting to do with the slowdown. age of empires on your old laptop wud have been dx9 or lower. you cant go any lower than 10 with vista,

howd you imrove the bios? that sounds usefull. and yeah i have the latest driver up and running,

You would enter the BIOS at the post screen (by pushing delete or a button similar, it might note which), navigate through till you find the setting to allocate system RAM for chipset use. It may be moot, because some do this dynamically.

Vista would definitely compound things. Have you disabled the visual/desktop effects, Aero, etc?
