Size Of Hard Disk Is Not The Actual Size.....

I bought a 200GB hardisk recently. Now my problem is it's not 200GB. I understand that when you buy a hardisk, its space is not the actual space. Like my 60GB hardisk, the space is only 59.3GB, which is 700MB less. But what I don't understand is that my new 200GB hardisk. The space is only 186GB, which is 14GB less. Is that normal? Coz for me 14GB is a big deal.
The 200GB, I've put it as slave. The master is the 60GB hardisk. Both are ATA hardisk, using LBA. The 60GB is a MAXTOR, and the other one is WESTERN DIGITAL. I use Win xp Pro as an os.

Yep. HDD manufacturers rate hard drive space with 1KB = 1000 bytes, whereas Windows correctly claims 1KB = 1024 bytes. Doing the math:

200GB @ 1000 bytes/KB = 200000000000 bytes
200000000000bytes @ 1024 bytes/KB = 200000000000/1024/1024/1024 = 186.26GB

an easy way to remeber and calculate the actual size of a hard disk is to remeber its always 93% of what is stated

take 93% as 0.93

200 x 0.93 = 186 Gb

of course this method isnt quite as accurate, ceewi1 came out with 186.26 Gb, which is slightly more accurate than my one.

60 x 0.93 = 55.8 Gb, this is different to what you came out with entirely, not sure whos at fault, but you get the general idea...
