Skulltrail D5400XS Question.

I am getting ready to buy this, but I need to know several things before I become serious. I am using a Intel q6600 processor, will I be able to run two of these on the skulltrail? Or do I need different processors. Also, can someone direct me to what type of memory I need to buy for it? On newegg it says that it requires (FBDIMM) DDR2 800/667 MHz.

Any help will be appriciated! Thanks.

wow your getting into some deep stuff here. you need two SERVER processors, meant for socket 771 not socket 775, you need fully buffered server ram, you need a very large case, a really good power supply...... your in for a few grand at least.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121330 mobo about $680 shipped

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134648 4GB fully buffered ddr2 800mhz ram, obo $225

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117110 2X $790 quad core X5355 Xeon

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703009 PC Power and Cooling 750W PSU obo $150

just that in calculator comes out to $2650, and thats without a case, dvd readers, hard drives, and operating system. oh or quality fans for the processors since they run hot

EDIT: sorry those are 65nm processors, these 45nm are a little cheaper, shave off about $200 from my price estimate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117143

I am aware of all this. What is the difference between my processor and a server processor? I have a PSU to use, and a case. I would like to know what kind of processor I need and which ram.

like i said you need socket 771 processors and your old quad core is not compatible. and your PSU best be at least 750W, the processors alone take 160W at stock speeds. a slight bump in voltage will probably make that 200W. and then add in the hundreds of watts needed to run the motherboard, ram, video card and hard drives.

and if you want to know what processor to use and you have the money, the processor and ram i posted are very good.

Thank you! That is exactly what I was looking for. Is the Skulltrail even worth it for gaming? If not, can you show me a top of the line mobo that I wouldn't need to change stuff with? (Exception of ram). I am looking for a mobo that will give me a real good change in performance from the stupid HP one that I have. I thought it would be more around 1200 bucks, but I was wrong.

no, the skulltrail could even be worse for gaming than your HP. its not made for gaming, its made to be a server board. wait a few months for the intel p45 chipsets to start appearing, they are supposed to be quite good. if you really cant wait, check out the nvidia 780i/790i

I was just about to say- is this good? It should work quite well im assuming with my 9800.

Will the new intel p45's work with my CPU? How much better will they be? I might just need to wait.

yes, the p45s will work with your CPU, and i dont know how much they will be yet, probably the same as all new motherboards when they first come out ($150-$250), either way, it will be a hell of a lot cheaper than a skulltrail.

What about the 790i Ultra? Good board im assuming right? Looks like with the cooling set-up and a nice fan, I could crank out that Q6600.

just a noob

wait for the 790i dreadnought from foxconn if you want to oc otherwise youll be fine with the 790i ultra, but you will still need ddr3 ram

I have decided I want to buy the 790i Ultra after some research. I see that it needs DDR3 as you said, but It also said unlike the regular 790i which uses DDR3 (1333) ram that it uses DDR3 (2000) ram. Is there a big difference between the two? If the 2000 will give me much better performance then the 1333, can you direct me to some DDR3 at 2000 that costs around 220?
