SLI brands

When going SLI is it recommended to get two of the EXACT same card? Or does it matter if one is a different brand? Or what if one is overclocked and one isn't?

yeah you can sli any of the same card from any brand like 2 8800gt's, but not two different cards like an 8800gt and an 8800gts.

if one is overclocked and one is not, they will both run at the non overclocked speeds (unless you overclock the other one manually).

Yep basically SLi requires the same model of card, but manufacturer doesn't matter.

If ones over clocked and ones not, the higher card will be pulled down by the lower card.

i've noticed a difference when i sli'd my 8800 gtx's. i'm gonna add a third one soon, i'd like to compare single card speeds to 3-way sli speeds. multiple cards also allows multiple displays when not in sli mode. imagine arcing 6 displays in a semicircle and gaming like that.

i wouldnt recommend getting a 3rd card. you'll see about a 10% increase with a 3rd card, just a waste.

yeah look up the alienware curve display on youtube. i would prefer not to game like that i like the one screen but thats just personal preference

Yeah, I knew they had to be the same model (i.e. two 2 800gt's, or 2 8600gt's etc.) but I wasn't sure about the other stuff. Thanks.

Also, are 2 8800gt's really as good as people say so, like about the same as a 260??? cause I already have one 8800gt, and was looking at the 4870, but if 2 8800gt's will come close to the 260, then i'll just do that and save a lot of money. A 4870 is really more than I need anyways.

yeah, i saw that curved display a while back. i'd never get one though, the res isn't high enough. the performance gains for sli'ing depend on display size and what resolution you're using, right?

I just added a second 8800GT, and love it. I bought the same exact model of card, but the newer one had a newer heatsink, the board color is black, when my first one is green, and the DVI ports are green, instead of white, but not a problem, I plan on having them volt modded and overclocked.
