SLI, is it worth it?

Is it worth paying extra for SLI on a motherboard, how much does SLI really improve graphics when too cards are paired up? Is it more worthy to buy a new graphics card or get SLI on your motherboard so you can buy one of the same?

It really doesn't improve it much at normal resolutions. SLI gives huge advantages at high resolutions though.

It's never a bad idea to get an SLI motherboard, because they don't cost that much extra. But the performance gains are not huge.

I tend to disagree here.. =o

My grafic's cards are almost 1,5 years old now :o yet i can play the games maxed out atm. also.. SLI does really help when you want better immage quality at medium resolutions.

If its worth it or not,.. thats up to decide for yourself. I havnt regretted buying it so far.

and.. you play games at 1024x768? most LCD's have a native resolution of 1280x1024.. So i think you could take that as the default resolution most people would play the games at.

besides.. were those benchmarks with 8x AA and 16x AF?

well.. its quite simple to explain i think... then you run something that doesnt even load a single card fully.. and add a second card, that puts some load on the CPU too, and run the same again,.. yes, it would end up lower.
but... if you run something where the single card is a bottleneck,.. the SLI setup will outpoerform it by far.

also.. if you run something with the settings that SLI is slower than a single card.. you have no idea what you're doing,.. and shouldnt have a SLI setup in the first place.

ok i'm starting to get the picture, if one card is good enough then two is not wise, but if one is not good enough, and your computer has a pretty high resolution then you should look toword SLI, so should I look toward SLI if I'm using a High Def TV as the monitor with resolution of 1366 x 768

well..Like said, I'm using 2 7800GTX's on 1280x1024 at the moment, and i coulnt be happier with it :o

tough.. I would look for a single 8800GTS (or GTX ) for now,. you could always add a 2nd card (since 1 of those is enough for everyting)

ok well i'm using 1 bfg 7600 gtoc right now and its proven exceptional I get the full effect of every game, but I'm just using a 17 inch lcd monitor, when I move video card to the basemnt computer (which is in the process of being built) and use my Insignia 27 inch hd widescreen 1366-768 I will just have to see how good the card does, and if its not good enough then I will buy another and use SLI. I am still puting together the basement computer, and after looking trough this forum I have decided to go with SLI, and I have picked out this Mobo, would you guys give options, or a better recomendationm please?

no.
dual video cards is never worth it unless its a gift :D haha
they only really did that to get ahead of ATI for the moment. it does help performance and if i were ever going to do it id go all out and get dual video cards... of the best type possible... ex. dual 8800gtx's right now.
