Depends, some newer Intel chipset boards can run C/F and SLI. But in general, NO. A Nvidia chipset board cannot run Crossfire.

is it worth buying a new motherboard to put another HD4870 on there or is it better for me to buy nvidia?

Well thats up to you but, if you already have a 4870.Two 4870 in C/F is probable faster than a single 4870 X2. Plus another 4870 and a C/F board would be cheaper than a 4870 X2. Dont 4870 X2 run around 450/500 bucks.
