Sli

i was wondering if sli is only good for two like gpus or could you possibly have more if your motherboard has enough slots?

also, can you have two different gpus running in sli kinda like having a stick of 512mb ram and a stick of 256mb?

With the release of the 82.xx drivers you can mix and match vendors, even with different clockspeeds. And you can use SLI without the bridge, or having to restart when switching between SLI and single.

no, SLI works only with 2 exacly the same cards.

You have not kept up on latest events... shame :P.. J/K

Yes this indeedy true :). I learnt this yesterday myself. Nvidia has to do somthing when ATi can mix and match the way they do.

what is a bridge? i am guessing it connects the two cards together somehow, but i want to know for sure.

its a little connector that goes across the top of the two cards to link them, as far as im aware as long as you have the newest drivers you dont need it now

You can have more than 2 cards if your mobo supports it. I have read articles and seen pictures of a quad gpu board.

how is that possible? as far as i read, an sli makes it so all odd nubered codes go thru one gpu while the even numbed codes go thru the other gpu. what would be the purpose of 4, or how would it even work? mabe for double monitors?

they're not all connected from what ive read, there's no driver support from nvidia so it wont be able to work as quad SLI (yet). It is theoretically possible by using the tiling method of SLI but obviously not all games are gonna like that.
At the moment the quad PCI express board runs as 2 pairs of SLI cards or 4 separate cards

but still they have to be the same GPU. -_-

If by same GPU you mean they both have to be 6600GT's or 6800GT's etc. then yes your right. But they can be from different venders and even be clocked at different speeds.

wow i didnt relise they brought that out so if i wanted to sli my msi 6800 gt and my xfx 6800 gt thats possible now and what are the benifits of crossfire

there are some benifits tho i think you can have a like 850xt pe with a x800 in crossfire so that good you can mix and match properly and you have a master and slave card
