does SLI carry over the memory from the second card?
like 2x256mb cards have 512mb total?
the reason i ask is because im debating getting a second card, but if it doesn't then i don't see the point since it won't perform (alot) better in higher quality situations...

It doesn't but then again it sort of does.

Basically you are getting about 256mb for each half of the screen. Even if you run the alternating frame method it still can be boiled down to this. SLI is really designed to perform in high quality situations.

Im not entirely sure myself. Praetor says that the memory is mirrored, but on some benchmark sites they say that the 7900GTX and x1900XT/X perform better partly because they have 1GB of video memory.

Mirrored is probaby the best way to describe it, but really the RAM is dedicated to the card. So whatever the card is doing (rendering part of a scene or rendering an entire scene) it's not like one card can access all 512mb
