I have an ACER Aspire 4720 laptop. Intel Core 2 Duo with a T7300 2.0 ghz chip.
1 gig of RAM.
It is driving Vista home premium and doing it veeerrry slowly.
Any ideas?

OK. So what would be adequate for me. I don't game on the computer although the kids grab it occassionally and game on it.
What brands are good and can I replace it myself?

A lot of laptop manufacturers sell their vista systems with 1 gig to keep costs lower. In reality its cheaper to buy it by itself than it i sto buy it from the manufacturer when you customize your laptop. Crucial makes good ram and its not very expenssive. With Acer laptops you should have a compartment on the bottom of the laptop to unscrew and get to one of the ram sticks and the other is located under the keyboard which requires some doing to get to (on the old models anyway, the new ones may both be in the under compartment) You will need to purchase 2 1gig sticks because what you have now is 2 512mb sticks.

Did that make sense?

hmmm. my experience with vista and a gig of ram, is just slow boot times and loading of object dock during every boot, but aside from that it's perfectly fine. but i am planning to add one more gig to my toshiba satellite. ;)

Thanks UkeleleNinja and yes I got the gist of it. Just about to have a look at it now.
Love the handle mate!

Thanks for the input! Apparently my mobo supports 4 gig so that's what i'll go for I think.
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Tknick90. Very useful feedback! My mobo supports 4 gig apparently so that's the way I will go. Had the back off it today and yes it's an easy operation once you know whats what. Thanks again.

I recommend you upgrade to windows xp, it will work much better with less RAM. Vista needs double the size of the RAM than xp needs in videogames, programs etc.
