how much memory do you have on your computer and what are the rest of the specs

because service pack 2 SUX!!!!

well, whats slower about the comp? specifically?

Not sure If I agree. I've Slipstreamed SP2 onto my Windows disk and operate using Windows XP Pro SP2 and my computer runs most Excellent :).

Windows XP SP2 is not for everyone.

If it was through a windows update or the downloaded version (installed seperate of windows install) then you can simply unininstal through control panel/ Add Remove programs.

Edit:

Yes what are your system specs? When asking for help you must always add your system specs as it helps us help you :). You can add them to your signature as most people do instead of always typing out your specs.

im gonna agree with blue on this one and say ur prob better off just getting rid of sp2...that comp has pretty low hardware.....

u sure u meant 10 gb hd???

Wow that was fast thanks :).

Well looking at your specs I'd say they would be barely enough to run windows xp. I recommend uninstalling SP2 from the system.

barely enough to run windows xp!??!!!! I had a laptop that was 200mhz pentium with a 3 gb hdd that had win xp jus fine

Regardless... It's pretty weak to run windows xp along with other certain apps that most people run such as Norton Antivirus etc. Tell me was that laptop fast? no it where as slow as a turtle and i'm sure that was without the protection of such apps as Norton. Tell me how much ram was in this laptop anyhow?

You asked for advice and I gave it to you. I believe what I said is correct.

It didn't have alot running on it at once just avg and the internet and msn and office 97 ( as there wasn't enough hard drive space and processor power for office xp) and I never had all those running at once accept avg was always running in the background for virus protection. And yes I must say it was a bit slow.

Well anyhow tiss cool. When I say it's minimum requirements I'm talking about the ram anyhow. Not the proc. in order to run Windows Xp with SP2, especialy if you'd like to run Norton or other Antivirus protection/Firewall or whatever. You will want more then 128 megs of ram. This is the reason I suggest removing SP2 as you dont really need it anyhow and if it's slowed down your machine then you can instal more ram or remove SP2.

Edit:

Also interestingly enough I did once instal Windows XP pro SP1 onto a laptop with 64megs of ram and I believe it had 700mhz proc. It ran fine until I installed Norton 2003 which literally brought it to a stand still.

Yeah it's all about the memory really, 64MB is the minimum allowed to pass the XP install. I don't find SP2 to slow down my machines noticeably. The slowest one i've got is a P2 350MHZ with 320MB of RAM and XP/SP2 and it runs like a charm, even the memory intensive apps. :)

The server is a P3 500MHZ with 128MB RAM and it runs just fine as well, paging abit when running Azureus tho. :P

Try scanning for VIRUSES/SPAMS, also turn off anything that AUTO-UPDATES, and do it manually. (Or scheduled for SUNDAY at 0000, that way its only checking the CLOCK, and not the INTERNET).

Better you uninstall your SP2, because it need more memory resident applications, libraries, etc. Your hardware is too old for this, so if you want, you can innactive some memory resident applications like antivirus, display, sound & motherboard management, firewall (include in SP2) etc.

Hmm...I'm not sure if the laptop can run fast and smoothly. Probably you use Win XP first edition (before SP1/2)
