Slow computer due to Security Suite?

My computer just got completely restored and wiped clean about two months ago. It had been out of operation for the longest time and wouldnt even turn on. Some technician fixed it but completely had to delete everything, install a new hardrive, new drivers and a bunch of other stuff. When i got it back, my computer worked like new. I had no saved files on it, it looked like when i just bought it. It worked very quickly. I have an AMD Turion 64 Mobile Alienware notebook, 2.41 GHz. I had windows firewall up, along with a free version of AVG, very basic. After about a month or so, i decided to upgrade to a new secuirty suite. I downloaded a free trial version of Spyware Doctor, which ran a scan and found approx 160 threats of low severity. My computer was working very quickly. There was never a delay when i pressed any button, never a delay with anything. I purchased PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus and even downloaded an advanced firewall from PC Tools, based on good reviews and a relatively low price, as comparable to Norton. This was only two days ago and now my computer is running slow as molasses, nearly three times as slow as before. The security scans say there are no threats present on my computer. But when I click on internet explorer it takes multiple seconds to come up, though sometimes it comes up quickly. There are glitches when i exit out of things (the windows dont close right away), my internet connection is not nearly as quick. When i type on google search the letters dont come up as quickly as i type and sometimes it appears to freeze. Is this all because of my Security Suite? I purchased an advanced security suite so i would never have my computer slow down because of malware/viruses or whatever but if its slowing down because of my secuirty suite that defeats the whole purpose? If it is because of this what is a security suite that would allow my computer to function at optimal level but still offer enough protection so it never crashes or becomes infected with malware?
 
My guess is you have it riddled with malware again. Please do the following also, please list your system specs as far as what processor you have and how much memory is installed.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware


Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

For future reference, it's much easier for the reader if you break your post up into paragraphs. Many members won't even look at a giant block of text.

That being said, the answer to your question is yes, absolutely.

Many antivirus/antimalware products will slow a computer up worse than the garbage they're supposed to protect against.

I install AVG Free on my client's computers, run the optimization scan, schedule a weekly scan and updates and that's it. I leave the Windows Firewall turned on, and that's about as much security as I implement on any machine.

Personally, I haven't used an AV in over five years, and have remained infection-free.

Antivirus companies would have you believe that viruses will just "jump off" the Internet onto your computer. This is not the case.

Do not download and execute files that you do not trust 100%. Keep your OS and software (especially your browser(s)) up to date. Stay away from "questionable" websites. And set up your home/office network behind a name-brand router.

And that's all you really need to do to be 99% safe from viruses and other malware. If you're really paranoid, download and install AVG Free or MS Security Essentials. They will take resources, but are not too bad.

What is on the Hijackthis scan and is it bad?

You forgot to list your specs.

I don't see anything in your hijackthis log except you need to uninstall the ask toolbar.

For right now, my guess is you don't have enough system memory installed.

You would have to buy more. What brand and model of laptop is this? I recommend to have at least 2gb of memory installed

And how do i uninstall the ask toolbar? It doesnt show in the add or remove programs list..

Do you have itunes installed? Usually ask toolbar is installed with other software.
 
Let's do a little experiment. Go to Start, type in 'msconfig' and press <enter>.

Under the Startup tab, click "Disable All," then click "Apply". Then go to the Services tab, check 'hide all Microsoft Services,' and then click "Disable All" and "Apply".

This will disable all of the extra crap starting up. Try it and see how it runs without all the extra stuff. Then you can decide if you want to re-enable the resource-heavy crapware known as PC Tools and your other bells and whistles. Personally, I'd uninstall it and go for something like AVG Free instead.

Also, as a rule of thumb, I try to match the amount of RAM I have installed to the nearest GB of CPU power x number of cores... so, in your case 2.4GHz x 1 core = 2GB RAM. I think buying another 1GB RAM would improve your performance dramatically.

Everytime I've seen the Ask toolbar installed on a computer, it has the option to uninstall on the Programs list. Please double check - should be right there at the top. If it's not there, then we'll explore other options.
