Recently my computer have been really slow and I can't understand why, I've run virus and spyware checks, defrags, among other things. I'm guessing it's the memory, but don't really have any big applications installed. How can I tell how much memory I have, how much I have left, and what applications are using what amount of it? Basically, my question is how do I stop my computer from being abnormally slow. Thanks in advance for any help,

Memory as in the hard drive? Or memory as in RAM? Usualy "memory" means RAM but I think you mean your hard drive. Go to my computer, hold your mouse over "C" or whatever your hard drive is partitioned to, and it will show how much space is used and how much you have. As for RAM, which wouldnt slow down your computer but rather make it slow to start with if you dont have enough, go into system properties and check hardware. Or you can download CPU-Z and check the speed and timings also.
 
It says total size is 70.9GB and Free Space is 30.7. Is that alot? How do I tell what files in particular are using a lot of that space?
 
Harddrive isn't slowing you down. What operating system do you have?

edit: also try disabling your system restore (if you have one) and then run virus scan again.

If My hard Drive isn't slowing the computer, do you think it's a virus? I have Windows XP Home Edition. How do you disable the system restore?

start>control panel>system


I had to do this the other week to get rid of one program that was stuck in a system restore on my computer.
 
hvae you installed any new applications recently? like anything that starts on star-up or runs on your bottom right task thing?

Yah, I have a lot of startup entries, but I don't know how to get rid of them
 
firstly, i would perform a full system virus scan. also, consider downloading spybot search and destroy and run a spyware scan.
then, uninstall any programs you dont need.
if you are still not happy with your system's performance, go to the start menu and type msconfig in the run area. go to the startup tab and remove any entries you dont want to use; bear in mind to carefully check what each entry is before unticking it, if you are not sure just leave it as it is.
 
Still trying to work on the computer, when I drage the cursor over the C Drive in My Computer it says total size 70GB, Used 35GB. But when I drag my cursor over all the folders in the C Drive to check the size and contents of each folder, there is no way that what I can see can equal 35GB. I can see 4GB, tops. How much of these contents can I not see? how do I clear out unwanted parts if I can't find what they are? Thanks, John
 
i wouldn't worry about that now. the vast amount of system files are often hidden, also, consider performing a scandisk of your C: drive as there may be some corruption
