Slow connections

I started having connection problems about a month ago. I was having to right click on the bars icon in the lower right hand corner of my screen (the one that shows connection strength) to repiar connection. It would work for a while then I'd have to keep repairing it. Being on about my 3rd Belkin wifi adapter now...these things only seem to last about 6-8 months....don't know what it is about them that they keep going bad....I've tried other brands and don't have much luck with any of them...you wouldn't think there would be much in them to break....maybe they're extremely cheaply made....anyway, I just installed a new Cisco wifi adapter (model #AE2500), but am still having connection problems. It does it when either IE9, or Mozilla Firfox is used as the browser. It does it when opening the browser and everytime a new page has to load. It doesn't always happen, its random, but I would say there are more times its slow, or won't load than when it's working like it should. I don't think its the router as my daughter's laptop is never slow. Any ideas what it could be? Im running Windows 7...router is a Linksys model WRT54GS V.4

It could very well be the router as its an old model. Access the routers configuration page and see what version of firmware is installed. The latest is 1.06.3

My daughter's laptop uses the very same router and her laptop doesn't have this problem...if the router was the problem, wouldn't we be having the same issue on her computer?

Well, you tried how many different adapters and still continue to have this issue? If its the same model adapter then its possible but if its different models then it would have to be computer or router. Some routers as they get older start to have issues when more than one pc is attached to it.

However, Belkin does to tend to be junk hardware. But if you are having the same issue with the cisco adapter then it must be something else. Can't tell without replacing the router to see what happens. Or try installing windows fresh...

I think its something with my desktop...I still think if it was the router I'd be seeing the same problem with my daughter's computer as well...

If you think its the desktop then its either driver related or you have some malware on your system. Have you scanned your system with malwarebytes?

Is your desktop further away from the wireless router than your daughters laptop?

Could be interference which is causing yours to drop out as it is getting a weaker signal at that distance. A neighbour could have a wireless network on the same channel as yours. You could try changing the channel and see if you get any better performance.

You could also try replacing the USB wireless adaptor for an internal pci or pcie card that has external antennas.

Your daughters laptop would have a far better antenna in it than a tiny usb dongle.
