Slow Dell Inspiron 1520 - Help needed

My friend has this laptop and I'd like to help him speed it up by installing additional memory and taking other actions as you guys may be able to recommend.

The laptop currently shows .99GB of total RAM memory. I believe that's what two (2) 512 MB DDR2 677Mhz memory modules are providing. The CPU is an intel dual processor (T2310)) running at 1.46Mhz.

Should he purchase two (2) modules of 2GB DDR2 800Mhz memory to help speed things up or would two 1GB memory sticks do the job?

Are there other actions I can take to help speed it up? I have the laptop in my possession and can take immediate action. Thanks

P.S. I've ran disk cleanup, defragged, CCleaner, Malwarebytes scan......but it still will not allow a Youtube video or any other video for that matter (movie clip, etc.) to play without rebuffering numerous times. This aspect in particular is very annoying....not to mention the slow opening of web sites, etc.

Have you installed the Klite Codec pack yet? Get it at cnet downloads or filehippo.com. When running ccleaner did you goto 'tools'>'startup' and disable as many of the startup programs as you could (not the virus or malwarebytes)? You can also control startup programs using msconfig.

You already have malwarebytes so just post the latest log from it please along with following the instructions below for posting the hijackthis log.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

No point of going to 4 GB of ram unless he has a 64 bit OS, which I doubt he does. Only go to 2 GB. It is probably a combination of some type of virus and the fact that he probably is running vista or later version of a windows OS and 1 GB is just not enough ram.

I would install two GB of ram and even with that being a older laptop I would do a fresh re-install of the OS.

You have a lot of startup items running which you really don't need which could be causing the issue. For right now I also see software you don't need that should be uninstalled so please post an uninstall list using hijackthis. Open hijackthis, click on open misc tools section, click on open uninstall manager, click on save, save the log and then copy and paste the log back here.

He's using XP....and it has no viruses that I can find.

You may also want to think about reinstalling AVAST as you have file missings in your log for its services that it needs.

Definately going from 1gb of memory to 2gb will give it an improvement. However, you may not see an improvement until windows has a fresh installation. How long as it been since it was freshly installed?

I'm not using Avast, I'm using Avira. I had trouble installing Avast so I installed Avira instead. Shouldn't I go ahead and remove the three (3) avast related items O23?

Definately going from 1gb of memory to 2gb will give it an improvement.

I believe he'll go along with the 2GB memory update. Is the memory difficult to change? Should I remove both 512MB sticks and buy two matched 1GB sticks instead of adding one 2GB stick and leave the one 512MB stick? The latter would be less labor intensive but would it work that way?

However, you may not see an improvement until windows has a fresh installation. How long as it been since it was freshly installed?

I'm pretty sure he never has done a fresh install of Windows.....neither have I but would like to learn how to do so.

Yeah, I guess I missed it that you were using Avira instead of Avast. Go ahead and have hijackthis fix those entries.

If you only have 2 memory slots, remove the old memory and add the new. If you have 4 slots then just add the new memory but make sure you get the same brand and timings as the old or you'll have to buy all new. It's very simple to replace the ram.

Will do.....AFYF this old dell seems to be running better after following your advice. And thanks for the quick response.

He has only 2 memory slots.....so I'll remove the two 512GB memory modules and replace them with a matched set of two 1GB modules.

Thanks for your assistance with HighJackThis johnb.

Have you installed the Klite Codec pack yet? Get it at cnet downloads or filehippo.com.

I have not done so yet mvanert, How will this help?

When running ccleaner did you goto 'tools'>'startup' and disable as many of the startup programs as you could (not the virus or malwarebytes)? You can also control startup programs using msconfig.

Haven't done this yet either mv.....I'm assuming this will help speed up the laptop.

How should I set it to work.....Normal, Diagnostic, or Selective?

I've already helped you stop programs from running at bootup. So don't worry about them anymore.

I can't get that Avast uninstall program to run.....tells me "The avast! self protection module is enabled. For this reason, the operation cannot be completed."

Also says "To complete this operation, either run this program in Windows Safe Mode, or disable the avast! self protection (via Settings-->Troubleshooting page".

OK john, I finally got those three remaining avast items removed by running the avast uninstall program in Safe Mode.
