Slow Download Speeds

Hey guys in my dorm room I have an older router, a D-Link DI-634M.

Here are the specs:

* Standards: IEEE 802.11g; IEEE 802.11b; IEEE 802.3; IEEE 802.3u
* Device Management: Web-based
* Security: 64/128-bit WEP; WPA; WPA2; WPA-PSK; WPA2-PSK
* Media Access Control: CSMA/CA with ACK
* Wireless Frequency Range: 2.4GHz to 2.4835GHz
* Wireless Signal Range: Indoors (100 meters); Outdoors (400 meters)
* Wireless Transmit Power: 15dBm ± 2dB
* Antenna Type: 4 External
* Power Input: Ext. Power Supply DC 5V, 3A
* Dimensions (LxWxH): 190.5mm; 116.84mm; 35mm
* Weight: ~10.56 Ounces

My issue is that when torrenting or downloading in my dorm room I have trouble gaining speeds over 150kb/s but now that I'm in class I am able to get speeds of 250kb/s up to 350kb/s and that's with at least 10 other people online through that router, and most of us running two computers at a time.

Also, when I'm at home on wireless I have no issues getting speeds of 1Mb/s and higher.

Do you guys think this is a router issue or just crappy school internet? I also tried shutting down all firewalls to make sure those weren't slowing it down and that didn't help at all.

Also, do you guys have recommendations on a new router? I really like the ASUS looks when it comes to routers but I'm really looking for something that can handle a lot of speed.

Could be anything that's slowing you down. If you don't have additional info it's a guessing game.

For a new router i'd check out http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/. Huge database of routers with specs and (professional) reviews. Alot of charts about the actual performance also. They really tested them.

Something like a network drawing would be nice. Of how all devices are connected.

The router seems ok. I just don't like asus as a brand when it comes to network equipment.

Okay, I'll get the network drawing in about a half hour, what pushes you away from Asus?

I really like their product design and quality so far but my only real experience has been testing products at Best Buy (which is limited) and playing with my new Eee PC.

Had some problems with network equipment from them in the past. Don't care about design, won't see the router anyway. If you just read some reviews about you should be fine.

I didn't have time to check the network at school, that's where my issue is, I get a MB/s here no problem, i'll have to update Sunday night.

They may just be limiting our bandwidth

plug computer directly into the internet connection skipping the router and check your speed, then you will know if it is your router or just slow internet in the dorm rooms.

will do, do you have a preference on the best site for testing internet connection speed?

Here is wireless through router:

Wired through router:

Straight through ethernet without router:

Seems that downloads stay within the same range but the uploads are quicker when hardwired straight to ethernet and no router.

Here's a test in a lecture hall. I think we're either being limited of our bandwidth in the dorms or too many people are on... This one blows them all out of the water. Must not be an issue with my router.

So... to summarize.
- At your home = fine
- In you dorm = sucks
- wireless in the rest of the school = fine

Correct?

If you get crappy speeds even though you're directly connected (without router) there's pretty much nothing you can do besides complaining. You can do a traceroute to google.com or something. Then you can see if a specific hop causes a lot of delay.

that's about right, i'll have to complain. I think there may have been some talk of limiting bandwidth earlier in the year because of people that know how to get around the torrenting block, like myself. It is still quick enough to play video games and do everything for school, so I'm thinking that's why it's so crappy.
