i have sbc yahoo dsl, use mozilla browser, friend has same internet and doesnt live far from me, gets almost double my download speeds on the same downloads... same mirror... sometimes i see my downloads start at like 250kb/s then gradually go down to 40kb/s.. i don't understand why, any ideas?

Most DSL providers offer different speed packages, are you sure that he's suppose to get the same speed as you?

well try doin a bandwith test and see if that matches up, that can also determine ur download speed.

also are u sharing the network with other computers in ur house? it culd be that u have a shared network that might be limiting your speed, maybe.

meh wish i was gettin 150 :P and yes i do share network with 1 other computer, but i am the main computer.. dunno much about that stuff tho

Depends on location, especially with DSL. Your friend is a little bit luckier than you are.

Try doing this: take your computer to your friend's house and hook it up to the DSL modem and all that. If you get the same slower speeds, something might be wrong with your computer or modem settings. If you get faster speeds, your house is at an unlucky location. Call SBC and ask them what the hell is going on. If you play your cards right, they might even give you some money back.

I had the same issue with my Comcast cable. If he is closer to the main transfer lines (fiber optic), then the signal bandwith doesn't degrade as much, and he will get a higher download speed. Plus, at different points in the day, the bandwith obviously fluctuates as more people get on-line downloading stuff. To test your bandwith go to this link: http://www.dslreports.com/stest Good luck!

Downloads also are affected by the download servers thierselves. If you try to download from a server that is slow or overloaded your download speeds will be diffrent and low of course.
