Slow internet speeds and possible spyware

Hi

I wonder if you can help me. I have the 10mb virgin connection on running on my desktop with vista. I have noticed over the last couple of weeks the connection has been very slow, I ran a speed check and was recieving just over 1mb download.

After the usual turn the modem off and on the customer service guy told me to run cmd netstat -n and the result was that I had some spyware running in the background. I have mcaffe security and windows defender running.


I have ran malwarebyte(0 detected) and superantispyware (78 detected and removed) as I have seen was recommended on other threads but since I have re run the cmd netstat -n some addresses are still established and some on a time wait

Can anyone help if the cmd info is correct

Please post the malwarebytes log along with a hijackthis log so we can see whats running on your system. I know you said malwarebytes found nothing but I need to see if you are running the latest database.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Hi Steve,

Whilst spyware and viruses will slow your computer down they will not normally mess around with a speed check as that tests the speed available from the router buy downloading and uploading a small file.
Normally if a virus is slowing your computer down you can open up your task manager and see how much % of you cpu is been used.
It doesnt makes sense to me that malwarebytes didn't find anything but then thats the nature of computers. Where there actual viruses and malicious software of did it just remove cookies?
One thing for sure though is that mcaffe isn't a strong level of protection and lost of people miss understand the capabilities of windows defender too.
The info within the netstat command will be correct but its a really rubbish way of looking for a virus. Every computer will have connections such as 5fg43s5dfg4L:http and 4d2s4-in-21d:http /imaps ect. and even if you do netstat -r it still wont really show you have a virus infection.
I had a problem with sky broadband i spent hours and hours on the phone while they were getting me to do stupid tests that i was telling them were pointless, turns out it was a fault at the exchange. Call them again tell them that you have got rid of any infections and if they say you have an infection ask them for more information.
