The computer I'm trying to fix is incredibly slow when it comes to the Internet. It is IE and its a cable connection and I think the only thing could be is the ISP. I thought it could be the firewall but I disabled it then ran IE again and it was just as slow as when the firewall was enabled.
First off I fixed his email connection (pop/smtp-servers). Got that up and running. I guess he didn't have his email working since 2/13/06 b/c those dates were on the first messages. And I guess he had 700 email messages coming in. Most of them were spam. Here's the weird part, when I hit send/recieve it is recieving the messages, but very slowly. Plus I keep getting an error come up: "your server has automatically terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity." Error #:0x800CCC0F. After this error comes up I close the send/recieve window. Then hit the send/recieve button on the toolbar, and it starts recieving emails again. But only for a little bit, then the error comes up again.
Also, most of the spam emails I deleted. Then closed OE and then restarted OE. Hit send/recieve then I see the emails I deleted, are still there. They weren't in my Inbox, they were being 'recieved' as new messages.
And lastly, he has content advisor enabled and the only way to disable it is to type in the password right? But he said he never enabled content advisor, he said this was the first time he's ever seen the content advisor window come up. So is there anyway I can disable content advisor without the password, because he has no idea what the password is. He asked me if a virus/spyware could've done this and I told him no, but ran a virus/spyware scan with PC-cillin Internet Security 2006 just to shut him up and everything turned up clean.
So....just to recap:
-IE is slow. (pop/smtp) servers are correct. Firewall problem? ISP problem?
- I get an error while 'recieving' emails and messages I delete magically reappear when I hit send/recieve.
-How do I get rid of Content Advisor w/out a password?
Thank You,
-Joe
BTW: If you can help me out, don't forget I can't access the internet so lemme know what programs I should burn onto a cd beforehand. Or a list I can print out before I go over his house again.
