Slow Laptop

I know its been discussed before, but my laptop is so slow now that I got internet here at home.

Its an older one,
HP Pavilion zx5000,P4
512 RAM
80gig HD

I don't know that much about computers,so I don't need to read something complicated.

10.8 gigs is left open on the HD and when I go to Task Manager, there is alot is there.

It's not like it takes 5 minutes to load a page, but takes longer than the other computers I use, just like right now when I try to preview this.Took 15 seconds. And now longer,I'm just gonna hit submit!

Have you defragged, deleted the temporary internet files, empty your recycle bin, scanned for malware/viruses? All these are a cause of a slow computer. Also what operating system are you running?

Yes I have, but I just got internet the other week and mostly use the desk top unless my son is on it then I use the laptop.

Does all those things in the task bar need to in there?
How do I know which ones to remove?
Will they go back in there every start up?

Most of the programs in the taskbar can be stopped and are not needed at bootup. If you give us a list of what is listed on the startup tab in msconfig, we can tell you what can disabled at bootup.

to to start menu and type msconfig in run. then go to the start up tab and uncheck programs you do not need starting. Also download ccleaner.com and run that to clean up the hard drive.

You may also want to go through and uninstall programs you no longer use. Hard drive is a little clutteres and has more files in which to search though which = slower response.

I there a way to copy and paste it here or do I have to type it all by hand?

What you mean go to start menu and type msconfig? Do you mean in search?

Like quicken and such like that?

There is no way to copy and paste items from startup tab. I agree with the other poster about uninstalling any programs that you don't use as that should reduce the amount of startup items as well.

Finally got around to doing this.I'm not a typer and it took about 30 minutes to type this up.I done as an email and saved to drafts in case something happened, then copied and pasted.
I also got tire of the last part so I left off .exe,I also left off Owner and Server and stuff because it would have taken me twice as long.
And I might have skipped a few accidentally.

What you typed was from task manager, you need to go into the "msconfig" utility and write everything down. I said use msconfig in my second post.

yea msconfig then start up tab and uncheck itunes ipod jusched corel qttask thats just a start but, it should help.

Here is a copy of it,after I figured out what you guys were trying to say,I didn't know you could do that.
First things, how do I know what to uncheck?

If you uncheck them to where they won't start on additional bootups and you wanted them to show up then you would have to reenter the msconfig utility and recheck them again.

This is what I would uncheck...

And unless you use dialup internet disable this one as well.
