Slow laptop

A few weeks ago my brother's laptop just decided to noticably slow down. It's a year-old HP with 512mb ram and a decent pentium processor. It's got a lot of mp3's on it, but there's still 15-20gb open on the hard drive. He's got virus protection software on it, but something is causing all of the processes to hog resources. If you go into the Task Manager and look at Processes, they seem to be taking 2 and 3 times what I'd consider normal memory needs. When running just Itunes and i.e., Itunes was using about 150mb, i.e. about 80mb, and other "processes" were on the order of 40 and 30mb. What do you think the deal is?

Thanks.

Well, more accurately, you could have a hard drive that's about to die. Usually when a hard drive is near the end of it's life, it'll slow waaaay down in it's response time, read time, write time, pretty much everything... I'd have him get any important data off of the lappy and try to get the thing serviced under warranty, if it still is under one.
