Slow Motion

I hope I can describe correctly what my computer is doing......

I have a compaq running WindowsXP and connected to the internet by cable modem. While my kids are playing games on the internet, the computer will slow down substantially for about 30-45 seconds (it doesn't freeze, just moves in "slowmo") and then it will be back at normal speed for a minute or two and then slows down again and the cycle continues. I've run spybot and spyware blaster and all comes back normal. I finally got so fed up, thinking I had inadvertantly did something wrong in my quest to fix this, that I just reloaded XP and tried starting from scratch. Nope! That didn't fix it. I thought it was Internet Explorer acting up, but then it started happening with a software loaded game.

I've also checked all updates with windows and ie and I have the latest versions and updates with both of them.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what is happening?

Thanks!

what are the system specs? and do are you sure it's the pc or is it just lag?

if it's a P4 it sounds like it's overheating and throttling until the heat gets down to resaonable levels then repeating the process.

Same dealy for Athlons (just not as well documented). Could also be the vidcard throttling too but thats unlikely.

What kinda games are you encountering this for?

Remember that Novell is one of the jerk programs that slows down the computer. If you have it, uninstall it.
Novell is also a networking program so if they do have it installed they might NEED it.

post with the comment about needing the novell, i agree. people dont normally just install it for fun. anyhow, check your temp. and i agree with others on the connection speed also, if it is only doing this when you are online playing games, sounds like lag to me too.
