Slow net with Router.

i have a Linksys cable modem model "befcmu10" Vrsn 4, and a Linksys Wireless router model "WRT54G" Vrsn 3.

my problem is that when i have the modem and the router hooked up (wired or wireless) my connection drops every once and awhile, and i get very slow speeds. i especially knowtice the slow speeds while im DownLoading files. many times Fileget says it has "retried" MANY MANY times...

one person told me it could be the power strip im using so i tried a dif one and nothing. i also thought that sense the two boxes are stacked on top of one another, maybe the heat is causing them to mess up. so i unstacked them and even bought a small 4" fan and neither made a difference.

FYI: i have this problem if i use just my laptop (specs in sig) or i have my desktop and/or girlfriends macbook pro useing the line.

if anyone has any idea pls let me know. im tired of unhooking and rehooking the router up.

thank ahead of time.

check the wireless connection, if it says: VERY LOW. ya know your problem. another thing is, if your using DSL or something, going at 100MBPS, and you got a 54MBPS router, the speed is gonna go down, and if the wireslss isnt working well then you get even slower speeds. also, if you have the older 10MBPS network card upgrade it. another thing is you have a bad/slow DSL provider

guess i should of been alil more specific. it is a wireless/wired. the problem happens weather i use either one. atm im using wired on my laptop.

the computer im useing (theone in the sig) is pretty top o the line...

i checked the router and modem and both say 10/100 so im assuming that covers your suggestion on that part? also, i dont knowtice the slow speeds right away, it usually takes about 10-20 min.

my ISP is cox cable. i have a 7down/.5up connection speed.

thank you for the very quick response, and i hope my additional info will help in solving my problem.

tlarkin, with as much as i know about computers, i have yet to flash or update any firmware. i do know the basic principles behind it. i did a lil research here at cf.com and heard mention of a third party FW cald Tomato. is this something i should consider? also do u have or know of any tuts i can get... i dont want to brick my hardware because i didnt know what i was doin. :(

thanks for more info

The Linksys support center has tons FAQs and Walk throughs. of it. If you are looking at third party I recommend www.dd-wrt.com but I have never used tomato. Also check out their forums section

You just download the file onto your computer, log into your router, update the firmware via router control panel tab, point it to the file you downloaded it and let it go. Just never try to flash over a wireless connection.

thanks tlarkin, i'll check out linksys' site first and see if i can get this resolved. if not i'll try out the dd-wrt.com.

thanks again

well i did the firmware update to the latest version 4. ive been downloading through the router for about 2 hours now and i'm unable to see any speed problems, and i can still serf the net at the same time as when i DL.

so thanks a TON for the help guys. much appreciated!!
