slow pc / services running 99%

I am trying to help my mom over the phone with here pc. It has an athlon 2000 pretty out of date but normally runs fairly well. It is taking a very long time to get it booted and is running very slow in XP. I had her go to the task manager and look to see what processes are running and she stated "services" is running 99%. I had her right click then try to end this process but it will not close... any ideas to get this process shut down..?

the pc is running too slow to run any kind of program and it is running safe mode...

Most likely its infected. Is she running any virus or malware programs? Run malwarebytes if not.

running avg free but malwarebytes has never been installed... and it is not running well enough to get on the internet....

Download on another machine and transfer it with a usb flash drive or burn it to a cd.

I will have to make a cd then get up there tomorrow. I have been building her another machine so maybe I will just suprise her tomorrow with it...
