Slow pc

Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to sort the speed of my pc . I built my pc a while back but it always seems to run very slow. The system consists of an Acer mother board coupled up to a AMD athelon 3000 64 bit processor. I have 2GB of memory an 80GB hard drive and a grafix card and am running windows xp pro. This pc may not be the most up to date but surly it should run at a reasonable speed and not get confused and not respond to programs all the time. Could this be somthing to do with the way the pc is setup? ideas any one??
 
Run a defrag, registry cleaner, anti virus/spyware scan and disable startup items. Also, that CPU is very old. See if you can upgrade to dual core.
 
I am going to elaborate on what Diduknowthat has stated.

Download Spybot first and run that.

Then use the "Run..." command and type "MSCONFIG" and check which programs you have starting at boot up.

Then I would run Disk Defragmenter.
