What would cause a computer to sometimes take a long time, 3-5 minutes, to startup ?

Malware, failing hard drive, a few things. How long has it been doing this? Have you tried doing a system restore to when it was working properly?

Is your data backed up? There's a chance it could be a dying HDD, you don't want to try other fixes and potentially lose the opportunity to save your data from a ticking time bomb. First backup your data, which should be done anyway, then go to Seagates website and download seatools, run the smart check and then perform a long test. Post your results.

I spoke too soon, it took forever to start up just now. I literally almost fell asleep waiting.

Look in event viewer for any errors that may help. Hard to tell without doing some diagnosing.
