Slow Ubuntu Startup

I found this program called automatix that just automatically makes everything work in Ubunut, and i found a way to enable my ati driver. Only one thing to fix, i am dual booting with xp, xp starts fine, but ubuntu takes a good 4 minutes before reaching the login screen. Does anyone know what the problem could be. I installed Ubuntu alone without xp and had the same problem also.

some integrated ati graphics card
2gb 5300mhz ram
1.6ghz cpu

which one would be of concern. Do some systems not support ubuntu well, mine runs well, just takes literally about 4 minutes to start

It's a long shot, but maybe it never profiled. You use GRUB as a Bootloader I take it? If so, when the OS list appears, highlight Ubuntu, then press 'e' to Edit the sequence. At the end of the line that starts with 'kernel', press 'e' again. Move to the end of that line ant type 'profile' (no quotes), then Enter, then 'b' to Boot.

What this does is make a note of all the files used during the startup process and saves their specific location, enabling the system to move right to the files it needs the next time instead of looking through everything. The profile process will take a long time to boot since the system is reading your hardware properties and every startup file to see if it's absolutely necessary.

If it was something as simple as a faulty profile, you should be good to go afterwards.

Thanks for the suggestion, ill give it a shot and get back to you. I hope it works, i really like ubuntu, and hope to eventually master it such that i can eliminate xp.
