Slow USB Transfer Rates

Hi, does anyone know of a way to check and see if my USB transfer rates are satisfactory. I just purchased a Western Digital My Book to back up my files and I am using the USB option to perform the task (No Fire wire card) but it is painfully slow.
 
do you have a USB 2.0 card installed on your computer that the mybook is connected too?
I just got a MyPassport and it runs fine :D
