Hey i just bought a new computer and XP loads slower than my old pentium D. at the loading screen (with the xp logo) the loading bar scrolls across about 15-20. which is way longer than my last, much slower computer. i kinda just expected the OS to load very fast on this comp.

Are you using the same hard drive or a new one? Also, how much memory do you have? if you have 4gb id recommend upgrading to a 64bit OS such as vista 64bit or Windows 7 RC 64 bit.

Its not uncommon for it to take longer to boot even though your rig is faster FYI, it can depend on multiple variables such as hardware.

Also, open run, type msconfig, go to the boot tab, advanced boot options, check the tab where it says "cpus" and select 3.

Typically lags like this are cased by software (drives) hanging up. Check into your drives and confirm they are all the latest. If they aren't, try upgrading. If they are, try looking for perhaps a slightly older version. I'd specially look into the network drives first as they tends to cause this problem more than other hardware. Also look into the programs loaded during startup as others mentioned. Firewall's can be notorious for causing slow startups, especially if they aren't configured exactly right. Well...it's not so much the firewall causing the lag, but another program waiting until it times out for a network/internet connection.

i didnt see that anywhere :O i dont have a boot tab, i do have a boot.ini tab with an "advanced options" button but it doesnt have an "cpus" options

Select the "/NUMPROC=" and select however many cores you have.
