Slow

Hey guys, I kinda asked this but I put all of the information together about my computer. The problem is I'm getting a really slow disk speed of only around 3600 kbytes/s ... The other computer in our house is older and is getting 26000 kbytes/s. Know of any reasons why i would get such a slow disk speed? The problem is its disabling me from editing videos because I cant even import the highest fps. Thanks

something is probably running in the background and using all the system resources, post up a hijack log, processes log and see if we can help.

What do you mean your only getting that? You mean its running at that speed? Or that's how much is free? either way that's normal, unless you ment something else.

Go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, and bring up the properties of the controller the drive is connected to. Tell us what the transfer mode of the drive is. If it's reset to PIO, that could be causing your problem. If so, this article describes how to correct it.

Thanks a ton for the help, it is falling back to PIO but I cant get it to switch to DMA either even when I went into the registry as outlined by the article. I think I'm going to pick up a new hard drive and see if it works better, if not I can take it back Thanks for the help. Any oter suggestions would be highly appreciated

It could also be disabled in the BIOS. Take a look here for more info.

A new hard drive MIGHT help, but my experience has been that this is more often related to the drive controller on the motherboard. You may have more luck with a cheap PCI IDE controller card.

id say reformat and reinstall everything. make sure to back up any files.. say with a dvd burner or back it up to another computer through your network.

Thanks for the help everyone! This is what I did.. first I reformatted.. and did what you said with the registry.. still in PIO mode. So I got a new drive and now it is running in multi-word DMA mode 2 , I'm getting 5 times what I was getting. instead of 3 mb/s I'm getting around 14. But I should still be getting over 20 mb/s, and it should be running in DMA mode 5. I'm extremely happy with the speed.. buttt it should be better.
