So a couple months ago i bought a desktop for college. (As seen in sig) Its awesome, but i want to be able to get out of my room to type and just chill on the internet. So i need a low budget (<$500) laptop. It will be used for email, typing papers, surfing the web, and playing music from my flash drive. And i would reeeeeally prefer XP.

I found the Eee pc 1000 on Newegg and liked and it has great reviews, but i wanted to get some expert opinion.

Also i saw the Acer Extensa EX4420-5239 and like it too..

So anyone with suggestions please let me kno!

Depending on where you live. if you live in the US, try shopping on Bestbuy or Circuitcity they have better deals on laptops

get the eeePC, it can do basic stuff fine and its extremely portable (keyboard is small enough to type with one hand but large enough for two hands).
and thanks to the Intel Atom CPU, it has uber battery life.

If you want something really small, I would recommend getting Acer One over an EeePC. Acer Ones are actually full-fledged laptops, the only drawback being that they come with no optical drive, but neither do Eees and Acer One's seem a lot more practical in general, they actually have real HDDs and come with a bigger screen. Of course, it also costs more, AFAIK you can get those for less than $500 but if not, an Eee would be great, I was considering one myself but then I found a great deal on a "real" laptop, and after rebates it cost less than the Eee, so... no questions asked.

I don't know about the exact Extensa model you linked, but we have some Extensa lappies at school and those are unforgivably big and bulky, and not quite aesthetically pleasing IMO. For your needs, I would definitely recommend Acer One or the EeePC - trust me, normal lappies are way harder to carry around than you would think, you definitely want something small and lightweight for the "chilling outside" type of stuff. Big, or "normal-sized" laptops are more of a thing for those who want to just pack their computer up and take it to office, library, etc., but are surprisingly hard to use "on the go".

thanks guys.. this is a pretty tough choice i think.. but i am leaning towards the Eee because of the portability/battery life, XP, and intel processor...... and as im typing this i look to see that its out of freakin stock... i suck at life

ok i think i am going to go ahead and get the acer. who knows when the asus will come back into stock, if it does at all.. maybe i can buy another battery if i wanna go outside or something, and then if vista sucks too much ill just buy a xp cd to have forever and hopefully you guys can help me wipe out vista and install xp :)

Be warned, though, many laptops don't have XP drivers made for them, even mine didn't and it was an older model back when I bought it - I would make sure that you can get XP drivers for all devices/peripherals/whatnot before getting XP.
Acer Aspire 1 or a Asus EEE pc would be your best choice.
+1 - if you really want it for "on the go" type of stuff, I would rather wait for either of these. However, if you really like the Extensa you linked, then you might as well go for it, it's largely a matter of personal preference as well.
