Smell?

Hey, in my last post, i said my motherboard southbridge was broken. The shop exchanged the motherboard for me and evyerhting is fine now. However, i have another concern, my antec sonata II case came with a 450W Smartpower 2.0 and it is emitting really bad smells. it sometimes give me headaches.
do you know what might be causing this? Thanks

ut oh, that could be a leaking PSU i am guessing. or badly burning plastic.......

not good! turn it off and check!

ur scaring me.... btw, how do i check.....i opened the case, the PSU seems fine. not too hot, nothing is leaking....

I'd wager that the capacitors in the PSU are leaking electrolyte. I assume it's still under warranty, RMA it.

1. Little electrical components within the PSU (and other components) that store a charge
2. The fluid within the capacitors
3. Return it to the manufacturer and get a replacement
4. To the system, yes. That PSU will eventually fail and should be replaced as soon as possible.

the thing is that when i exchanged my mobo, they said they also swapped out the power supply and replaced a new one at the store. it would be very awkward to ask them to exchange another one. is there a way to check if the psu is defective? in the bios, in the PC Health tab (of Gigabyte DS3) said that +12V = OK

w/e that means, a friend told me to check there.

You can check the output voltages in the BIOS or with a multimeter to check whether they're within spec (within 5% of their ideal values), but that doesn't guarantee that the PSU is OK.

You can open it up and check the capacitors visually, but that will void the warranty, so isn't a good idea. If you're concerned about taking it back to the store, you could always contact Antec directly.

i have just done some research and this problem is very well-known. some places say that this smell occurs because it is a new electronic part.....could that be the reason?

p.s. when the comptuer shuts off, one of my keyboard light is still on...xD, does that have to do with the psu?

thanks

Well, it depends on the smell. New supplies can have a mild smell, but if it's really bad you probably have a problem. Unfortunately, I can't smell it for you :)

since i got the replacement yesterday, ill let it run....for like a week or 2, if it continues, ill call antec and get RMA or something

Thanks
