Smoked MB, does the Proc have a chance?

I've been been collecting a decent amount of machines lately with fried motherboards. How this happens I don't really know but I'm pretty sure thats what I'm up against. I was wondering if there is any hope for the processor in a fried board. Also, is there a cold diagnostic procedure for processors So I don't have to go out and buy a board on faith?

In all the years I've been doing it I have yet had a board go out and take anything with it. Dont get me wrong, it does happen. But I thinks its rare under normal conditions. There are times when a standoff is put in the wrong place, but in the right place to fry something including, Processor/Memory and the board when you hit the power buttom. Or a Cap/Mosfet or choke blows that powers the CPU or Memory.

I've had a motherboard go on me because (this was a while ago) the company I bought the system from didn't put any stand-offs between the case and motherboard. It took nothing else with it, but maybe I was lucky.
