SMPS Problem need help

Hi There,

I have been facing strange problem with my machine off late. First it started with my on board LAN not working all of a sudden, then a day later my SMPS went dead. I called the technician. He fixed a spare (used and working) one and took the bad one for repair. I used his for 3 days and that also went dead. I thought of buying a new SMPS which I did. It worked well for a day but that also went dead. Guys don't laugh please :-)

I did get my electric points in my home checked and they were certified fine.
I am or now I should say was using a P4 machine powered by core-2-duo processor on Asus P5b-VM motherboard. with a dedicated graphic card and tv tuner card.

Can anyone tell me what could be the problem. My technician tells me that there is something wrong with the board which is pulling more power then what it should.

I am based in mumbai and its raining pretty bad since last whole week. could wet weather be the root cause of all the problem ?

3 SMPS in 3 days...guys I need help...please ;-)

Well, 3 PSUs in 3 days certainly points to another problem. I'll assume that the PSUs you've used aren't horribly underpowered for your system, and that they should have worked fine (you're not buying $15 PSUs for a high end system, are you?). Using a quality PSU would be a good start. Have you had any problems before the first unit failed?

Wet weather shouldn't cause these sorts of problems, unless your computer itself is getting wet in which case the PSU will be the least of your problems. Storms and accompanying power surges may, but 3 in such quick succession is extremely unusual, and your power points were surging enough to blow them all out you'd probably be experiencing problems with other devices.

How are the PSUs failing? Is there a bang, smoke, random restarts, just won't turn on, etc... It seems likely that another device is causing the problem. Not necessarily the motherboard, and not necessarily just drawing too much power, but certainly behaving in a way that is causing damage to the PSU.

ceewi1, Thanks for the reply.

Well to give you the details I have been using all the branded PSU's of 400w made for P4's and which supports extreme machines.

On how the PSU's went dead. The First two went down quietly. Means I used the machine in the night, switched it off and the next day morning the machine wont start. Just like a person going into comma first and then dying. The 3rd PSU went down with a bang, spark and smoke.

Before the first unit failed, my on-board Ethernet/LAN connector stopped working.
