Is there a way to send a SMS from my computer to a mobile for free? Also, must be Australian

Yahoo Messenger has an option for it. It works for me.
I think you can do it from their website also.

in Yahoo Messenger? if yes, then its under Actions> Send an SMS message

There is no Send SMS message button...
