if i put a new hard drive in my macbook can i just use the $29 snow leopard upgrade install or do i have to install leopard and then later install snow leopard?

Despite the fact it is marketed as an upgrade, you should be able to do a clean install off of your Snow Leopard cd.

thanks cause i was looking into putting in a 500GB hard drive but i don't have the discs that came with my computer only the snow leopard

You're welcome. That whole upgrade thing is kind of a scam. They try to market only the box kits for people who use Tiger, yet the tiger users can just get the $30 and get snow leopard without it.

no its not confusing because that is what i did i originally had tiger but when i took it in for repair they put leopard on for free so i just spent $30 and got the snow leopard upgrade

i plan to get a new hard drive for my macbook that i currently have snow leopard installed on and i was wondering how i will use the disc of snow leopard i already have to install on my new hard drive because it is not a family but it is the same computer

Brian comes to the rescue.

No, if you buy the upgrade disk and put in a new hard drive, you will have to install leopard before you can install snow leopard. The upgrade disk checks to make sure you have a prior OS installed.

so even though i had it on my hard drive that i have now but i don't have the discs i won't be able to use the new hard drive

Hmm, Well what Ive heard from a friend is you can call apple support and tell them you lost the disks and they will send you a new copy. Or you could maybe go into the apple store with the hard drive and they may install it for you.

i just got off the phone with apple and they said that i am able to do a complete install with the snow leopard disc

I mean you can try, But I just had to put a new hard drive in my friends Mac and the snow leopard disk did not let me install it because there was no prior install.

oh well i am just going off of what he told me today and i am not sure if it will work or not but i guess we will find out when the new HD gets here in a few days

Idk, maybe because I got one of the earlier ones? But I was able to do a clean install with the upgrade disk on a new HDD.
