So, I picked up 2 old laptops but the one im interested in is the Dell inspiron 1100. Now, im just learning about computers, and I think I know some basic stuff , and I even saw a tut on how to disassemble the laptop and looked up whatever I didnt know. I want to work on the laptop and see if I can improve it with other parts. Where is a good place to start learning what I need to know?

Greetings!

What goals do you have for the build? Those are pretty ancient, even in an upgraded state aren't hugely useful but would be a decent learning exercise.

Can you identify what platform and components it already has? That will help you determine upgradeability.

If you want to learn about computers, pick up a desktop.

Messing around with ancient laptops isn't going to teach you much of anything, unless you want to upgrade your skills at removing and installing sodimms

@beers

I just wanna get the laptop(s) up and running again as well as make any improvements to them as I can. Idk if there is any problems with them because I dont have a charger so I cant turn the laptops on. And yeah its mostly to learn. and here are the specs: http://www.cnet.com/products/dell-inspiron-1100/specs/

@johnb35 why is that?

@Laquer Head whats a sodimm? and I have a decently old dell desktop somewhere, which I will get too one day, but I do want to focus on the laptop for now because I only use my laptop, so I thought learning about laptop hardware would be especially useful for me and because im fixing one of the laptops up for a friend (and well the learning experience ofc)

so its not worth it?

Nope. curiosity aside, that gear is ancient and will have zero usefulness to teach. You'd be better off with a beater PC tower as those components would at least be more relevant than proprietary laptop parts.

And your question earlier

SODIMM, or small outline dual in-line memory module are memory chips used in laptops (RAM)

Thanks~ I might still do something with it just for fun.

Also while im here, the Dell 1100 has a internal modem. Anyone know why? and is it benificial?

A dial up internet modem. Now that really tells you how old that thing is. There hasn't been dial up modems in laptops for years. For the people that don't have high speed internet and still use dial up internet.

lol Cx

does it connect you straight to the ISP?

I kind of understand what your saying, mind explaining a bit more?
Basically you plug it into your telephone line and when you ring a number on your landline telephone it provides (very slow!) internet to the machine whilst also disabling the landline telephone line (which isn't very helpful).

Dial up is really slow and has not been used for years and years. We've had broadband where I live since 2002.

You can probably also plug it into LAN - it just likely has a dial-up modem too.

Don't spend any money on this system. It's too old to be spending money on!
