Lol so yeah one of you guys said...

Just crossfire the 4850 with the 4870?

Wow like is that possible with any card? As you see below I have a 4870...

I was thinking of getting a 4890 and selling this 4870 and then getting another 4890 down the road....

Or get a 4870x2 and selling my 4870...

But I didnt know you could run two different cards?

So my question is.... Should I get a 4890 and CF with my 4870... Or should I get a 4870x2 and CF with my 4870?

Would the extra price of the 4870x2 be worth it CF with the 4870 compared to the 4890 option?

Cheers

you would just end up with tri-fire if you used a 4870x2 and a 4870, also you can't crossfire a 4850 and 4870, it would have to be a 4850/4850 or a 4850/4830(its something about the core), and i would personally just get crossfired 4890's(4870 and 4890 would be pointless, unless the 4870 could match clocks with the 4890)

Hmmm so you cant combine two differnt cores?

That chart... what does "Internal ATI CrossfireX Interconnect" mean?

4870 and 4890 would be pointless, unless the 4870 could match clocks with the 4890

yeah well that would be a temporary solution to make use of both cards (if its possible) till I sell the 4870 and get another 4890?

you could use the 4870/4890 as they are the same core(at least to my knowledge) the 4890 would just downclock to the 4870's level

The 4890 has a reworked core, but has the same amount of shaders as the 4870, so it can clock to the speeds of a 4870 or 4850.

Crossfire and SLI are considered parallel processing. It would only make sense to use two of the exact same cards so you don't get bottle necks.

I have not ever heard of mixing and matching video cards but then again I haven't ever looked into it.

So if I get a 4890 I can CF with my 4870 for the time being... And it will be basically like having two 4870's?

How does ram come into all this? Is it just the total ram over both cards?

For ****'s sake can anyone here do some research? You can crossfire any 2 Ati cards of the same core. And no, they will not downclock to the slower card. This has been able to be done with Ati cards since the Catalyst 7.11 drivers.

Read this article and remember it, people.

So in conclusion you can crossfire your 4870 and get a 4890 and not lose the performance of the 4890.

Never have researched the question before because it seemed common knowledge among so many. The article, though doesn’t specifically address the question “Is the faster card reduced to the speed of the slower,” and the comparisons lack a CrossFired pair of 3850s to compare scores to the 3870/3850 combination.

This article does state that the faster card is slowed to the speed of the slower has a comparison between the 4850/4850 and the 4870/4850

Not saying it’s true because some guy wrote an article, but there seems some evidence to support his statements.
