hey, what version of windows vista is appropriate for a homemade pc that will be doing alot of gaming surfing downloading burning that sorta thing? is it nessesary to get ultimate? or wil basic or premium do?

You don't one edition or the other just to run games alone. The options vary between the Basic, Business, Home Premium, and Enterprise editions with the last mainly seeing corporate application more like Server 2008 in a sense.

The Ultimate edition is geared with more networking support like XP Pro was over the Home edition. One thing to note now with SP1 out is that the retail price has fallen sharply from the original $399.99 now seen for $219.99 for the Ultimate edition.

You can see the current suggested prices as well as compare the differences seen in each edition at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx

Some have elected to go with the 64bit editions just for seeing more then 3.12gb of ram available in Windows on gaming builds. But it still will be some time before the general software market converts in that direction with plenty of 32it games and softwares still coming out.

hmmm ok that makes sense,, i guess what i want to kno is if the home basic will hinder my internet( downloading surfing) movie editing and gaming exp?

The Home Premium edition in general works out for most while saving on the higher price tage seen on the Ultimate edition. But with the retail prices having come down for Vista now with SP1 you simply have to look over what features you would want besides gaming alone when choosing.
