so what you guys are saying is, that if a person has 180 might as well buy a 6600gt?

i been reading most of the post in the forum. i been getting different messages from everybody, and this is my comclution. if i got 180 dollars to spend on a silly 3d video card for my "super" fast system (lol). its best to go with the 6600gt.
now what i would like to know. its this card similar or averga comparable to the 6800gt. or does it run some how the same in most games. because it will be really silly to spend double for something that performs the same (to the average geek). i play a lot of unreal tournament3, half life2, and sme times far cry demo.
the parts i already got are

MB NFORCE2 7NIL1
CPU AMD|2500
and DDRAM PC-3700 512MBKINGMAX

things i need are a HD, Videocard, 512 more ram,and a dvd rw. but my biggest concern is the 3d card, just to get it out of the way. any input ,greatly apreeceated

The 6600GT is no match for the 6800GT ... now perhaps if it was clocked at 800/800 than id prolly bet on it however its not. It is however arguably the best card you can buy for the ~$200 range :) (and packing a 6800GT into that system would be bottlenecking the videocard so a 6600GT is an excellent match)

Do note that NV43s (6600GTs) more so the PCIe ones but it affects AGP ones too, the heatsinks tend to suffer from poor-contact/wobble-sinks and as such you may have temperature issues even though the die process shrank to 0.11.

so , are there other 6600gts that are not nv43s, so i dont have to deal with this issue. ill look to see if they cost more.

All 6600GTs use the NV43 :) Generally speaking the AGP 6600GT doesnt suffer from wobbly-sinks as bad as the PCIe ones though

off topic: is the Geforce6800 ultra pci-e runs much better/faster than the 6800GT pci-e? cuz the ultra costs $800CAD and the gt is only $600.. so there is a huge diff in price....

Proberly should go with the gefroce 6800GT. The performance difference between the two is not worth the money(yes I know this comming from someone that did spend the extra money :P ). The ultra is slightly higher clocked then the gt but that about the only difference. You proberly be happy just getting the GT unless you have $200cad to throw away.

I never understood bottlenecking with video cards. Why would a faster card bottle neck his system and what determines it?

bottlenecking occurs when one part works faster than another, if your video card pumps out video faster then it receives new stuff to do the system bottlenecks the video card. Praetors post isn't exactly clear but he means the system would be the bottleneck not the videocard.

I think the biggest reason for the price gap between the 6800GT and the Ultra would be because of the fans that they stick on the Ultras. The HSF on the Ultras are massive.

1. All 6800Us run faster than 6800GTs.
2. $800CAD is overpriced

The card GETS bottlenecked by the rest of the system :)

The reason is because the 6800U has parts that are of such a quality that they can be clocked at the clocks they run at. The 6800GT's parts arent guaranteed to run stock at those speeds and hence they are cheaper. The enhanced cooling unit helps too but thats an option up to the OEM
