So WTF...I cant get a decent laptop with a 13.3" screen?

I've been looking around for a bit for a new laptop...building different ones on manufacturers websites...but I dont want a huge 17" widescreen display!!!!

for some reason...ppl seem to assume that bigger is better, but I kinda think that defeats the purpose of having a laptop.

So I guess Im asking if anyone has seen any good deals ($1200 or so) on laptops with decent specs:
- 160ish GB HDD
- 256MB+ Video memory
- 1 or 2 GB of RAM
but with a small crisp 13.3 or 14.1 inch screen. The only one Ive even gotten close with was an HP but it was a tablet and a touchscreen which made the display really blurry and kinda ugly.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

although i hate dell i will recomend looking at dell... but hps are nice and they do have 15' screens and they are a great combo of portability and size

thanks for the quick reply, I'll take another look at HP...I think I see a nice one right now sctually XD

btw: I also don't care for Dells...dont know why, but meh

OK sry...dbl post...but can anyone tell me how much video memory Im looking at with a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150?
I couldnt find it on the NVIDIA website

http://www.nvidia.com/page/nb_6100_tech_specs.html

EDIT: OK i guess its not a dbl post XD

you dont really want to go as low a 6XXX series. I don't know the specs, but i think it really matters on the manufacturer of the laptop you were looking at. I'd try and get atleast a 7600GT in a laptop.

Well if the memory is acceptable it would be worth it...but I cant seem to find any good laptops with good GPUs unless the screen is huge...

I guess ppl arent into gaming on a laptop with a small screen =(

hmm...i can build a decent one for $1320 thanks for the tip

I'll keep it in mind, since 14.1 is good and small, but its a little pricey...since each processor upgrade is so expensive...but luckily the graphics card goes up to 256MB with the 2GB of RAM.

thanks again

I have considered it but I've decided to stay away from Macs...but I think its in the best interest of the board if we don't get into why I should or shouldn't =)

You can buy the MacBook and install XP/Vista on it if you want... :)

With most <15.4" laptops, you are usually restricted to integrated graphics. Now the 6100/6150 is a good integrated card, it's still not good for playing the newer games, no matter how much video memory it can utilize.

Did you check out the 15.4" Dell Vostro's? The Inspiron's also have a $425 off coupon if you sped $1399 or more.

Ya Ive looked at the Vostros and the Macbooks and just about everything else at this point...and I guess Im going to end up with a 15.4" screen even tho Id prefer that it be smaller.

It really wont make that much of a difference in portability...I just like the smaller screens, but I guess comprimises must be made in order for me to get one thats as powerful as Id like it to be.

Thanks for all the input everyone...and I hope to be getting this laptop soon. Once I do get it I'll let you know what my final decisions were =)

If you are really set on a smaller laptop Brian, you remember that the Dell Inspiron and Dell Vostro have 14.1" laptops with the 8400 right? It's not a high end card, but it's MUCH better then all the other ones around with the 6100, x3100, GMA950, etc.

wait rly???
no i didnt realize that...because I am dead set on a small screen, so I guess I'll go look again, and even tho most ppl wouldnt want to play a game on a small screen...I personally like the idea of a tiny system with a lot under the hood XD

Also Im happy with 14.1...cuz although smaller is better...it might be tough to game on a 13.3 lol

alright I'm gonna go check back
Geoff: what should I be looking for?
Im pretty sure theyre all gonna have Core 2 Duos so is 2.2GHz gonna cut it?

EDIT: OK I went and put one together, and here's what I came up with:

PROCESSOR...............Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM....Genuine Windows Vista® Business
LCD PANEL.................14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD Display
MEMORY....................2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM
HARD DRIVE................160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE............8X CD/DVD Burner w/ double-layer DVD+R write capability
VIDEO CARD................128MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8400M GS
BLUETOOTH WIRELESS..Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
SOUND OPTION............Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL........................$1341

Not too shabby and right down my alley
