Socket 775 Mobo Dying...Options...

So, first off, been trolling here a while and have learned much. Thanks all.

My issue at hand though is one where the info I've found is too old to be of much use (other than to improve the quality of this question).

I have a "hand me down" PC my friend had tinkered with. I use it for a solid mix of gaming (Battlefield, etc), web, office and video/music playback. It's OK for gaming, fine for office and web, a little slow for HD video and managing my 100,000 song music library.

My Socket 775 Mobo is dying. I've known this for a while, but I've been lazy and cheap. But, it's now time to address the issue (before another startup round of BSODs).

My current system is:
  • Intel Core2 Quad (Q6600 - 65nm)
  • Scythe Ninja 2 Heatpipe
  • ASUS Benicia (HP)
  • DDR2 RAM (6GB installed, 3x2GB, with one empty and dead slot, plus 3x2GB unused/uninstalled)
  • NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
  • Western Digital USB 3.0 PCI
  • Windows 7 Ultimate

So, I'm committed to replacing the mobo and case (which I've already butchered to get it to hold the new 1200w PSU I added to replace the 2nd PSU my friend had added when he installed the 9800).

I'd prefer to keep the CPU and RAM and just swap Mobos, but I'm open to options.

My Options (as I see them):

Option 1 ($)
  • Swap to a new mobo such as MSI P7N or Asus P5N
  • New heatsink/fan
  • New case
  • Keep everything else

Option 2 ($$)
  • Swap to a new mobo such as XFX nForce 680i LT
  • New heatsink/fan
  • New case
  • Add second 9800 GT in SLI
  • Keep everything else

Option 3 ($$$)
  • Switch to a new CPU (probably a Core i7 of some sort)
  • New 1155 or 1156 mobo
  • New DDR3 RAM
  • New heatsink/fan
  • New case
  • Sell CPU/RAM/USB 3.0 Card on eBay/Craigslist

My goal is to both get a more reliable system and to enhance (if possible) my gaming and sound/video playback abilities for the least possible cash outlay.

I'm looking for suggestions about specific Mobos for each option and feedback on the feasibility of selling off my existing components (not sure how much of a market exists for these).

Thanks in advance!

option 1 or option 3.

For Option 1, why you need new heatsink?
and don't spend a lot on mobo if you go for this option

Really, it would not enhance gameplay that much replacing that CPU. I would not waste money on a core 2 quad when an i5 is cheaper than it, and way faster.

Are you sure the MoBo is causing the BSODs? What brand and model power supply is it?

And I wouldn't recommend getting a second 9800GT. It wouldn't improve performance that much.

aslo with a new mobo unless you have the retail cd you will need a new copy of windows, they run for 100

option 3 for sure.

but i would say, slowly start upgrading all your gears to something more present.
the i7 will definitely keep you at the top of the game for a long time.
and by getting a more current mobo, itll give you more choices of how you can make changes onto your rig as well.
